Mood Beach hosts fundraising day for Respiralia
A kids’ Christmas Fair, Treasure Hunt and Evening Wine Tasting were hosted last week on Friday 11th December by Mood Beach in Portals in aid of Fundació Respiralia who support children and adults in the Balearics who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis. The event was also generously sponsored by the Bendinat Group, Mallorca Solutions, Cristaleria Calvia, and Tûnel.
In the afternoon children visited Mood to take part in the treasure hunt to help find Santa’s missing reindeer, the clues were spread throughout the charming Christmas market and around the various areas that make up Mood Beach. Mallorca Solutions sponsored the prizes for the kids. Volunteers, James and Angela, were delighted to be Father Christmas and his reindeer helper for the afternoon. Another volunteer, Sergio Garcia, a teacher from Agora School, provided more entertainment when he visited as his alter ego: a mad scientist!
A wonderful evening of fine wines followed, (donated byTûnel from Rueda and Rijoa, and the Bendinat Group, and supported by the glazing business, Cristaleria Calvia in Peguera) was held on Friday 11th December. 1000€ was raised through sales of raffle tickets; prizes included hotel stays donated by TUI and the Valparaiso Hotel as well as a decoration item donated by Lares (worth over 200€). Two original paintings were auctioned and the whole evening went with a swing thanks to Cuban music by the very talented duo Cuba Yuma. For more details of this worthwhile charity visit www.respiralia.org.
Margaret Whittaker OBE, the director of Mood Beach, said ‘We’re always delighted to help where we can with charities on the island, and we were very happy to be able to host this event for Respiralia’.
The benefits of the Mediterranean diet
A study from researchers at the University of Athens Medical School links longer life to consuming large quantities of vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and olive oil, keeping alcohol intake moderate and avoiding too much meat. Meanwhile, eating lots of fish or seafood and going light on dairy products does not seem to increase longevity.
So do we need to rethink our menu offerings at Mood? As I read on I found that our traditional Sunday Lunch seems to hit the spot perfectly, except for the alcohol bit! Other than that, you get all those vegetables – more on demand by the way, if you’re a vegetable aficionado like my husband. And it’s probably a bit of a splurge on the roast beef etcetera, but it’s just once a week, so that’s OK really!
The authors of the study, which examined the eating habits of more than 23,000 Greeks over nearly a decade, said many of the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet were wiped out when their analysis removed heavy vegetable consumption, light meat intake or moderate drinking. Combining several components, such as having a diet rich in vegetables and olive oil, showed health benefits.
Wine consumption on Sundays at Mood does tend to go through the roof, as it’s included in the price of the meal. White wine is favourite, with over 50 bottles being consumed followed by Rosado with around 30 bottles and red trailing a bit on the hot summer days with around 20 bottles being consumed. I suppose with the live music and the food and our waiters constantly topping you up (especially when you’re not looking) it’s easy to drink a bit more than normal. Lucky we have security so you can safely leave the car and grab a cab. And we do like to see you enjoying yourself!

Defying Dementia
Maybe like me, you have first-hand experience of being the main carer of an Alzheimer sufferer. And maybe like me, you are in the late summer of your life (eh-hem! OK, I admit mid-autumn is more accurate) and maybe you have a terror of becoming a burden on your family.
You’ll know then, that anything that can be done to prevent or treat this horrendous disease is very good news indeed and you’ll know that for carers keeping your sense of humour is a major strategy in your personal defence. So jokes like “ The great thing about Alzheimer’s is that you get to meet new people every day!” don’t offend but actually help.
While consuming 500 milligrams of caffeine a day would not cause ill effects for most people, neuroscientist Gary Arendash noted that people with high blood pressure or who are pregnant need to limit their caffeine intake.
As with all research, many trials have to have concurring evidence before we can rely on the information, but the growing evidence that caffeine consumption may treat or prevent Alzheimer's disease has received an extra boost from two new studies.
Florida researchers report that a daily dose of 500 milligrams of caffeine -- the equivalent found in five (225g) 8-ounce cups of coffee -- reversed memory issues in mice bred to develop Alzheimer-like symptoms. After two months on the stimulant, the mice rebounded to score just as well on memory tests as normal mice of the same age that had never exhibited signs of dementia.
"The new findings provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable 'treatment' for established Alzheimer's disease, and not simply a protective strategy," lead author Gary Arendash, a University of South Florida neuroscientist, said in a news release. "That's important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people, it easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process."
For a 225g serving (8 oz), our euro filter coffee typically contains 100 mg caffeine, tea contains about 35 mg caffeine, and soft drinks contain 25 mg caffeine.
At Mood Beach we are standing by to give you all the help we can, coffee, tea cola – and all in the totally non-fat versions – aren’t we good to you?
iPhone Moves
“iPhone is more than just a phone. It combines three devices in one: a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device. All that and more makes it the best phone you’ll ever use.”
So claims Apple but, personally, after hating it for 3 weeks, for some misty reason, I am now completely in love with my iPhone – and I haven’t even got my mitts on the very latest offering, the 3G S. I think it was when I tried going backwards – which is what going back to the other phones felt like, that I really started to appreciate the true iPhone experience.
British Telecom has announced a new deal with the Starbucks chain of coffee houses in the UK, which will see around 650 new wireless hotspots spring up over the coming months. OK, I suppose that was a big deal for O2 , the iPhone and Starbucks but some of us have been offering free Wi-Fi to our clients for the last few years. As the owner of Mood Beach in Portals, I believe that in this time of fewer visitors to these fair shores, we have to continue looking for ways to attract as many clients as possible through our doors.
CEO of BT Openzone, Chris Bruce, said, “Use of our Wi-Fi doubled last year and coffee shops are increasingly popular as a third place to work or log on to the internet. We're constantly looking to boost the choice of places to connect - where people want it.”
At Mood Beach, we have quite a few people who have caught on to the idea that you can park easily, and surf on our turf, in comfort, privacy and for free! Well, OK, I do expect you to splash out on a 2.50€ coffee or something. Does that make me a bad person?
